Range: formerly occupied a vast range, about 5,000 km wide, from Mauritania to Ethiopia. Currently, isolated groups are found in northeastern Senegal, southern Mali, northeastern Chad, western and northeastern Sudan, northern Eritrea, and northeastern Ethiopia.
Natural History: the spurred tortoise is adapted to life in the southern Sahara. This harsh environment gets little rain, has sparse vegetation, and has a very sandy substrate.
